How to build a business, online.

Hello Folks,

My initial attempts to advertise my www.jerkybarrel.com business, were feable. I did some word of mouth, as mentioned above, telling family, and picked up a couple of subscribers. My initial hope was that I would signup my family and build under them going forward. This actually worked, rather inadvertently. I signed up a couple of family members, then immediately, due to no fault of theirs, received half a dozen or more signups under one of my family members. My upline put them there. I was ecstatic.

In my excitement I began to purchase other advertising. "Guaranteed traffic", traffic exchanges, and so forth, with little to no response. Then life got busy and I let it all sit, and sit, and sit...

More later.

How to BUILD a business, online.

Hello Folks,

This blog is a journal of activities related to building an online business. Specifically; MY online business (http://www.jerkybarrel.com/) which I have had for five years now. (JerkyBarrel.com)

The good news: This excellent little business has paid me monthly for five years!
The bad news: I have done little to nothing to build it.

A little history on this subject might be appropriate.

I've been "online" for nearly 15 years in one form or another. I started a small web hosting business (http://www.earthlake.com/) years early on, through which I market website hosting and technical services to various clients. The primary thrust of this hosting business has been more hands-on, than automated. The website being more of a business card for technical offerings than an online marketing tool. The Earthlake Web Hosting has done alright. It has survived the past 10 years and provided opportunities in other areas.

A little over five years ago, I ran across a little MLM side business that markets beef jerky (of all things)! Who would have thought that beef jerky would be a potential MLM market? I love beef jerky, and the startup cost was nothing, "just signup and you have a web-based jerky business." So, I did exactly that. Owning a web site business, I purchased my own domain name, (http://www.jerkybarrel.com/) so I could have some control with my advertizing, and I had my own little online jerky business.

Immediately, (and I do mean immediately) I received half a dozen sign-ups.

The cost to me each month, was $12.00. Which shipped me two bags of fresh, delicious, beef jerky each month, and gave me a free online jerky store, retail outlet, and MLM option. What a slick little business! My half-a-dozen MLM signups (which came out of no where) were paying for my jerky each month, so life was good. Good jerky, good business, a check every month.

I immediately did some word of mouth, (family) and online advertising, but truthfully. I didn't know what I was doing, I got a couple more signups, but soon got busy with other life activities, and pretty much let http://www.jerkybarrel.com/ run on its own. And it did just that.

Periodically, someone would happen across my website, order some single-purchase jerky, I'd get paid for it, and my dozen MLM signups just continued to pay me each month. This went on for FIVE YEARS!

I recently began kicking myself as I've watched the checks come, the jerky come, and have RARELY had a cancellation. The people who signup, just stay. People just like this business. They like the jerky, the overhead is nearly nothing (the cost of two packs of jerky) and the business just basically runs itself.

How silly, that we go through life always looking for the green grass over the fence, when, in fact, the grass growing in our own yard is just as green.

More to come....
